The Building Better Homes coalition lobbied State building Ministers and on 30 April were successful in getting 7 minimum accessibility “silver” standards into the National Construction Code. This includes things like a toilet on the ground floor with easy access, hobless shower, at least one step-free entrance, a safe continuous and step free path from the street to the entrance, reinforced walls to support grab rails in showers etc.
Only Victoria, Queensland, Northern Territory and the ACT have implemented these changes. NSW, SA, WA and Tasmania have not adopted the changes. There is now a campaign to urge these states to adopt the agreed changes.
