Things are heating up in the Electorate of Bennelong even before the Election is announced, the Liberal Candidate is Simon Kennedy and very few people in this area have heard of him but I am going to try to contact him. The Labor Candidate Jerome Laxale has been everywhere and I have filmed an Endorsement Video for him (as a local who knows how hard this man works). I am pushing the subject of Senior Housing with all Parties.

All the floods in NSW has brought to the surface how serious the housing situation is right now for all ages but I am seeing Senior Housing being mentioned a lot, so I have some hope at least.

Whatever happens, things have to change!

I have emailed Anthony Albanese this morning about Senior Housing and I received a Generic answer that I may or may not hear back:

I was referred to Labor Party Landmark Statements and I will quote a small part

“We need more affordable social housing. Not least for older women, who are more at risk of homelessness – many for the first time in their lives. Right now, the fastest growing group of homeless Australians are women aged 65 to 74”.

I will hold them to this, this Statement was made in 2019 and I am hoping that this will still be held if they get elected.

Here is a repeat performance by the NSW State Govt selling off Public Housing and replacing it with very little housing.

      https://www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/news/politics/2022/03/05/exclusive-leaked-do

The New South Wales government’s $1 billion plan to sell the Waterloo Estate public housing land in central Sydney will deliver fewer than 100 additional “social” homes over the next five years, ultimately doing nothing to relieve pressure on a waiting list that is currently more than 50,000 households long.

A confidential briefing paper to the Perrottet government’s powerful expenditure review committee, obtained by The Saturday Paper, reveals the proposal – which only went on public exhibition on Thursday – has settled on the sale of the high-value inner-city land to developers in return for 3050 new homes, 28 per cent of which will be social. This is less than half of what was initially deemed possible for the project. A further 64 per cent will be ordinary private homes and 8 per cent will be “affordable”.

This is just a small part of the Article. I have been meeting with and talking to Waterloo for years and also was part of the Millers Point selloff whilst dealing with the Estate I lived on IVANHOE ESTATE & battling with LAHC Staff who tore my Community apart. yes, its in the past but I feel that if this Govt does not learn from past mistakes they will continue to ruin people’s lives. My heart is with the Seniors who have lived there for years, it is a lovely Community, close & they look after each other (they have through COVID too) they will be scattered and forced to take places are they well below standard and a lot of them will die when ripped out of their Community!

Its all happening in Bennelong! At last we have a Candidate and its my good friend Jerome Laxale, must say Im very happy as Jerome was the first one to step up to fight for the people at Ivanhoe when we were being “sold off” and stood beside us all the way. He is a Ryde Clr and past Mayor of Ryde, he is a local and has done some amazing things in my area. Jerome is well aware of the problems with housing and I have already reminded him of the plight of Seniors in housing distress.

I will be busy helping Labor and will help with the Campaign as I belong in Jerome’s Branch of Labor, there is a lot to do and as Great & I (NASH Facebook) say…..It’s Time!

A lot of people had trouble getting in to the National Housing Conference 2022 online, I had problems but eventually figured it out after AHURI sent me a personal code. It was an interesting 3 days with lots of information, Jane Caro was outstanding! I have managed to get a lot of the Session Recordings on to the NASH Facebook Page so that everyone can take a look at the things that were discussed, so come take a look at the NASH Facebook page and join in to share information especially as we have a Federal Election coming up…

Still no Candidates in Bennelong! SA was a great win but we cannot take anything for granted in the Federal Election, the LIBS are out there with as much poison as usual and plenty of cash to throw around, hopefully people will remember and choose wisely but I also hope that if Labor take power they will follow through, Im relying on a good push from the Greens

Ok so here we are in February and we in Bennelong still do NOT have either a Liberal or Labor Candidate (or Greens) I find this totally annoying, Bennelong is notoriously Liberal so maybe the Libs feel that whoever they run will win and I do remember years ago when Maxine McKew (Lab) took on John Howard and won the Seat! I am watching this with interest, maybe its “you show me yours and Ill show you mine” buts its quite disrespectful to the people of Bennelong

We in Bennelong (Sydney) do not appear to have a Lib or Labor Candidate to talk to yet. Our Fed MP John Alexander is retiring, so I wait!

It certainly is time to make some noise as we move forwards to the Federal Election this year. Seniors have worked, raised their families and been an integral part of their Communities and it is time make sure that they can live their later years in safe & appropriate housing.

The fact that you have to be over 80 in NSW to get Priority Housing is a total disgrace and there are far too many Seniors who couch surf & house sit to have a place to live. The Aged Pension just covers living in Community Housing for me but private rental would make life impossible. We have “paid our dues” and it is time that the Representatives that we Vote for actually stand up and fight for our rights!

There is a Facebook Page that deals with history in my area of Ryde and yesterday they posted photographs from 1987 of the Ivanhoe Estate in Sydney as it was being built. Nick Greiner was there and I was so pleased to see the actual Unit I lived in as it was being built. It highlighted that this Estate was not very old and in very good condition as it was sold, the Minister saying on a News report “It has passed its use by date”. It is something that I did not understand at the time, still don’t and it was such a waste to be honest. Yes there is going to be 3,500 units, mostly private and some Social Housing tucked away in a dark corner but it will never have the thriving Community that we enjoyed at Ivanhoe. I am hoping the Tenants went on to join other Communities but many were heartbroken and I dare say that many of the Seniors are no longer with us 🙁

This very much seems to place the difference between PH & CHPs, the “Duty of Care” aspect seems to be very low in Community Housing and they are prone to advertise how wonderful they are without doing the hard work to protect people. Yes, we can take them to Tribunal but the stress levels in doing these types of things is pretty high. They seem to answer to no one!

      Hi Wendy

I have joined Shelter Pages on Facebook and I just “cut & paste” the Link to House on Fire to them or any Site that may be interested in joining. It comes up like this: https://houseonfire.oldertenants.org.au/forums/topic/contacting-shelter-agencies/#post-1527

I have not seen an invitation tab so I just cut & paste and keep putting it up on Facebook & Twitter. I think we will need an official invite tile that we can use so that we can continue to use it to gain the attention of people out there in Internet Land! Have a Happy New Year when it comes, Im pretty much in total lockdown because of the over 6,000 a day cases in NSW

Happy to report that this Lady has finally moved into a safe place where she does not have to live in fear. Finally they found her a “Head Lease” property but it took a lot of arguments and stress…..happy to say that she can finally live peacefully though and is so happy!

Thanks Wendy, Uniting want to help write it all, I still have all of the paperwork and boxes of information, it was a unique experience, I am waiting until I am released from Fair Trading as Public Officer of this Group, then it will be time to write this even if it just helps the next Estate to be taken dawn. The folks from Millers Point & myself have offered to help with Waterloo & Glebe, always good to pass on info. Same with “hand overs” to Community Housing, “Knowledge is Power”
